About

Why this list exists and how a hotel ends up on it.

The idea

Some hotels are just places to sleep. Others are built around a single, stubborn idea: a painted dining hall, a pod the size of a bunk, a room carved out of river ice. This site collects the second kind.

There are 11 entries right now, split into art, capsule, casino and ice. That number is meant to stay small.

How an entry gets written

First, someone on the team has to make the case that the hotel is worth a detour. Then the details are checked against what the property itself publishes. Only lasting facts go in: architecture, history, location, what the rooms are like in general terms.

Prices, offers and opening calendars are left out because they go stale quickly.

What stays off the page

There are no star scores, guest reviews or reservation buttons. Hotels cannot pay to be listed or to be described more kindly. When we get something wrong, we fix it.
