Ice Hotels

A building with a lifespan of one season, rebuilt every winter since 1989.

Icehotel

JukkasjÀrvi, Sweden

Work starts in late winter, a full year ahead. Clear ice is harvested from the frozen Torne, stored, and then shaped into walls, pillars and beds when the next cold season arrives. In spring, it all goes back to the river.

Each year a fresh group of artists is selected to design the art suites, which means the hotel looks different every season. Inside, the air sits a few degrees below zero; guests sleep in expedition-grade bags on reindeer skins. Icehotel 365, a permanent building, keeps a set of frozen suites open through summer next to warm rooms. Clear nights here often bring the aurora.
